2018 Lucia Chardonnay With generations of farming history in Monterey County, and a commitment to making exceptional wines, The Pisoni Family hand-crafts the Lucia wines from the Pisoni, Garys’ and Soberanes Vineyards of the Santa Lucia Highlands. A blend of 100% estate fruit, the 2018 Lucia Chardonnay is sourced from select barrels of the Pisoni and Soberanes vineyards. The higher elevations of Pisoni Vineyards add rich notes of baked apple, Bosc pear, and lemon curd, while the rocky, unyielding soil of the Soberanes Vineyard showcases signature notes of citrus blossom and wet stone. On the palate, complexity reigns as depth and nuance of flavor mingle seamlessly with bright, age-worthy acidity and a persistent, structured finish. 480 cases produced. JD 94
2018 Lucia Pinot Noir, Garys' Vineyard Garys’ Vineyard has been named “one of the most famous vineyards in California” by Lettie Teague in the Wall Street Journal. It is a joint venture between Gary Pisoni and Gary Franscioni, two native growers of the Santa Lucia Highlands. The Garys, like their parents before them, grew up together. True to form, the 2018 Lucia Garys’ Vineyard Pinot Noir yet again stands up to meet its lofty reputation as one of the most highly regarded sites for Pinot Noir in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Starting in the glass with an unyielding dark ruby hue from its rim to its core, this wine flaunts its youth with aromas of black cherry, ripe plum, and citrus blossom. Taking advantage of a near perfect growing season, the vines ripened their clusters slowly and consistently, setting the stage for a wine of notable purity, complexity, and structure. Dark berry and graphite notes weave together with bright, lively acidity and soft, supple tannin to form a final seamlessly integrated finish. A remarkable combination of meticulous winemaking in an ideal vintage, this Pinot Noir is wonderful at the moment, but will age gracefully for years. 850 cases produced. JD 96
2017 Lucia Syrah, Soberanes Vineyard The Soberanes Vineyard is the latest joint venture between the Pisoni and Franscioni families. Situated on the Santa Lucia Highlands Bench adjacent to the Garys’ Vineyard, it was recently named “one of the appellation’s most esteemed properties” by the Wine Enthusiast. Inky purple to its essence, the 2017 Lucia Soberanes Syrah explodes with savory notes of black peppercorn, cedar, anise, and bacon. A structure of soft, elegant tannin envelops notes of clove, smoked meat, and dark berries. Added depth and complexity are attained through generous whole cluster fermentation, together with long aging in the cellar in 60- and 132 gallon French oak barrels. The cool, windy rows of the Soberanes Vineyard produce fruit with great acidity and a sturdy backbone of structure. The softer tannins will drink well now or age beautifully for over a decade in the cellar. 168 cases produced. JD 95
2018 Lucia Pinot Noir, Soberanes Vineyard (this is optional wine which is included in the 4 bottle tasting pack only) Classic Soberanes to its dark ruby core, the 2018 Lucia Soberanes Vineyard Pinot Noir harnesses the rich, spicy, and floral notes for which this site is famous. Lush notes of black currant, black cherry, and macerated strawberry burst forth as this wine coats the palate, backed elegantly by savory notes of sandalwood, clove, and sage. With each successive moment that the wine breathes in the glass, persistent tannin from 10% whole cluster fermentation softens to velvet, contributing additional complexity and texture to the palate. Though this Pinot Noir will drink beautifully in its youth, early morning fog and brisk, windy afternoons have preserved its refreshing acidity, which will ensure a long, graceful aging in bottle. 430 cases produced. About the Pisoni Family
Farming is what we do. It is as much part of our DNA, as is rootedness to the region. Jane and Eddie Pisoni started farming in the Salinas Valley in 1952 and the care and pride they consistently brought to their work has been taken up in turn by their son Gary and his children, Jeff and Mark. Walking the land in all seasons, each of us feels a clear sense of connection, much the way parents feel when they catch their own reflections in the faces of their children.
When Gary began growing grapes in the mountains despite scoffing and disbelief—and in a few short years established the Pisoni Estate and Lucia labels as exceptional wines—our stewardship of the land was only strengthened. These days, under Mark’s and Jeff’s equally able direction, we produce elegant, classically-made Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah upon forty acres in three vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands, wines of which we are extremely proud.
About Jeff Pisoni
As a child, Jeff grew up in a family immersed in the practices of farming and winemaking. A fascination with science prompted him early on to elect winemaking for his own profession. Jeff earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Enology at California State University, Fresno and put his degree into practice at Peter Michael and Bernardus wineries prior to becoming vintner for Pisoni. Making wine allows him to extend his knowledge of and appreciation for the natural sciences every day. Jeff is married to Bibiana Gonzales-Rave, the owner and winemaker for Cattleya and Alma de Cattleya. We had the pleasure of hosting her for a virtual tasting in August.
About Mark Pisoni
Mark wakes up before dawn every day to check the vines—just as he once observed vegetable crops alongside his grandfather. Mark holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of California, Davis, and an M.S. in Farm Business Management from Cornell. Fusing the hands-on skills he learned farming with his father and grandfather together with the ideas and viticultural models he adopted in academia, Mark tends the vines of Pisoni, Garys’ and Soberanes Vineyards with affection and consummate skill.
