Piaggia by Vannucci Silva 2017 Il Sasso Carmignano
Mauro Vannucci's Piaggia estate is the creme of the crop in Tuscany's Carmignano district, and he crafts wines that add modern flare to the area's long history of traditional winemaking.
Piaggia's 2017 is a stellar wine from an average vintage in Tuscany. Lots of ripe cherry fruit without being over the top, painting a picture of dried red cherries, spices, plum liqueur and vanilla and tobacco. 70% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot. Aged in older oak barrels, seasoned with 10% new in order to add complexity without adding extra tannin or oaky flavors. This has yielded a wonderfully full bodied wine, reminiscent of fruits of the forest jam, sweet spices, thyme and cocoa, finishing round and ripe tannins.
