Maybach Materium 2017 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon
From a single hillside vineyard above the Silverado Trail springs this deeply concentrated, elegantly textured Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaker Thomas Brown's Minimalist approach encourages the character of the Oakville region to express itself through rich aromas and flavors. For 100 years the name Maybach has been synonymous with quality at the finest level. The tradition of artistry and craftsmanship of our forefathers, Wilhelm and Karl Maybach, is honored by the hand-made wines from our family-run winery. Original label drawing by Bob Johnson: the home and garage where the Maybach sedans were parked in the 1930's.
2017 was a vintage defined by extremes: huge rainfall in the winter and early spring, and a series of heat waves beginning in May. The most severe heat wave took place over Labor Day weekend. Winemakers watched as brix levels spiked unusually early the first week in September, and many people unfortunately picked. We decided to wait and watch. Physiologically, the fruit had a ways to go to be fully mature and ready to make a world-class wine. Having seen brix levels spike before, we had the foresight to wait out the heat wave. The brix in the Weitz fruit did indeed rise, but 10 days later, the heat subsided and so did the brix levels, returning to more seasonally appropriate numbers.
And here we are today with the finished wine and what feels like another classic vintage of Materium. This wine possesses all the hallmarks of the bottling: the color, the aromatics and the sleek, lush, palate-coating black-fruit. The wine has a decadent balance of fruit and spice notes, with the signature acid architecture to hold everything in place and to draw out a long, ethereal finish. Each year we must work with what nature gives us, and given the variables in 2017, this wine stands tall in the pantheon of Maybach Materiums past.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Materium is one of the wines of the vintage and, as I wrote last year, a solid step up over the Amoenus release. Loads of liquid violets, flowery incense, sappy herbs, graphite, and assorted blue fruits all flow to a full-bodied, thrillingly textured, pure, sensationally concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon. Super rich, plush, yet flawlessly balanced, it too is going to benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for two decades. (1/2020)92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Displaying a deep opaque purple color, the 2017 Materium Cabernet Sauvignon has a profound, very serious nose of baked plums, blueberry pie and raisin cake with wafts of dried herbs, chargrill and tilled soil. Full-bodied, concentrated and with somewhat surprisingly plush tannins, it has a lovely burst of freshness coming through on the long, earth-laced finish. The fruit for Maybach's Materium has been sourced from the same block of Weitz Vineyard (owned by Turnbull) in Oakville since the beginning. In 2009, fruit from another Turnbull vineyard—Amoenus Vineyard in Calistoga—was used to create this eponymous label under the Maybach name. Both wines are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, adeptly crafted by local superstar winemaker Thomas Brown, creating evocative expressions of the Napa Valley subregions and vineyards from where they come.
