Stuck in a rut? Seems like we all kind of feel that way these days with our entertainment, dining and travel choices so limited.  Break out of your normal wine routine with the 6 delicious red blends from “Off the Beaten Path” regions and varietals.  Sampler includes six wines, one bottle each of the following:

‘a Vita Ciro Classico Superior (Italy) – This delicious red is from the Ciro region of Italy (the toe of the boot) and is crafted from a local varietal called Gagliopo.  100% Gagliopoa rustic variety native that is sometimes referred to as the Nebbiolo of Southern Italy.  Organically farmed and made (vegan friendy) ‘a Vita Ciro is a classic example of the Gagliopo grape, with aromas of roses and dried cherries.  You can really taste expression of the Mediterranean, with notes of wild scrub and herbs intertwined with red fruit and the salt of the sea.  Tannins are leathery and rustic, but not harsh.

Suertes del Marques 7 Fuentes (Spain) - 7 Fuentes means 7 fountains. The name is a reference to the seven sites in the Valle de la Orotava, where the grapes for this cuvée are sourced. It's an incredible value and great introduction to the volcanic terroir found of the slopes of the very active volcano, Teide. Local varieties Listan Negro and Castellana Negra are utilized in this wine that is entirely fermented in small stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeast, then 40% is aged in neutral French Oak.  Textbook volcanic Listán Negro character, with the black peppercorns, dry roses and wet pumice underlie the fresh wildflower aromas and juicy bramble berries and dark plum fruit.

Terranoble Carmenere Riserva (Chile) – This fantastic example of Chile’s signature varietal, Carmenere, comes from the Maule Valley.  The wine is a beautiful purple-red color with bluish shadings with a highly complex on the nose, loaded with ripe black fruits, spicy notes and soft touches of bitter chocolate. It feels concentrated on the palate, with sweet and round tannins, a balanced acidity tension and a touch of chocolate in its ending, created from the 2 year aging process in new French oak barrels.

August Briggs Charbono (Napa) – If you’ve ever had an Old Vine Zinfandel or red blend that claimed to be Old Vine and Zinfandel based then you’ve probably had Charbono and just didn’t realize it.  Widely with other “Mixed Black” varietals into California’s heritage Zinfandel vineyards, there are only a few vineyard sites where there is enough of the grape to produce a varietal wine, but the folks that make one are very passionate about the varietal.  A complex bouquet that includes cherry compote, wild berries, leather and some smokiness. The deep and intense purple color may fool you as on the palate it is medium-bodied and well balanced with nice acidity for eating with food and definitely not heavy or over-the-top. Flavors of tart cherries, plum and dried spices lead to a lengthy finish.

Benevolent Neglect Counoise (California) – One of our favorite lighter style, summer reds that is a massive hit whenever we pour it at tastings when the Benevolent Neglect guys are in town. Counoise is one of the classic Rhone/Chateauneuf varietals and was brought to California by the Perrin family of Chateau Beaucastel. The varietal has begun to thrive in California among winemakers, sommeliers and consumers over the last few years.
The nose sings of ripe strawberry and blueberry, spice notes of anise and cassia bring great complexity. Fruit and spice continues on the palate with black pepper and red plum, a lovely bright acidity and soft tannins.

Tenute Sella Lessona (Italy) – Want to see how the “southern nebbiolo” stacks up against the real thing without having to shell out $60 for a top quality version from Barolo?  Lessona is one of the smaller DOC’s that grows the varietal but allows winemakers to blend in small amounts of other varietals (20% Vespolina here).  It has a ruby limpid red color and an aroma really fruity with violet, cherry, blackberry and spice notes. The palate is balanced and pleasant characterized by a balsamic and mineral aftertaste.
