The Sun Chase Vineyard sits high atop a west facing slope in the southeastern portion of the Sonoma Coast appellation. Perched at an elevation that rests above the cool maritime fog layer and overlooks western Sonoma County, the dynamic microclimates of warm hilltops and cool swales make this unique vineyard an ideal site for elegant, complex Pinot Noir.


Sourced entirely from a hillside block of the 777 clone, this wine began its journey in the pre-dawn hours of September 19th. After meticulous hand-sorting, the fruit was cold-soaked with 10% whole cluster for ten days prior to the beginning of native fermentation. Daily punch downs by hand occurred throughout cold soaking and fermentation. After 23 days of fermentation on its skins, the wine was gently transferred to barrel where full malolactic fermentation took place. After 15 months in 33% new French oak, my patience was rewarded and the wine was bottled without fining or filtration.


The passage through the magical threshold of the transition into a sphere of rebirth is symbolized in the worldwide womb image of the belly of the whale. The hero, instead of conquering or accumulating the power of the threshold, is swallowed into the unknown, appearing to have died. 2017 marks a transition for Cattleya from vineyard names to symbolic name that represents Bibiana’s journey.
