Favia Quarzo Amador 2012 Syrah
2012 Favia Rompecabezas Red Wine Amador
Our eighth vintage of Rompecabezas, Spanish for jig-saw puzzle, is inspired by the wines of the Southern Rhône, but of course is decidedly Californian in nature. With each successive vintage, the wine has gained in density and complexity, as the vines gain footing, and Ann’s vineyard team gains perspective and foresight. In the 2012 vintage, warm temperatures and an extended growing season allowed for varietal character to reign paramount—a property that we merely coaxed along in the cellar. Whole cluster, rich, muscular Grenache, with notes of bouquet garni and dried cherries, was co-fermented with fresh, vibrant Mourvedre. After a long, controlled maceration, the wine was blended with Syrah and aged in a combination of neutral French oak and 600-liter concrete eggs for twenty months. A beautiful ruby hue, the 2012 Rompecabezas showcases the complementary nature of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre—with fresh cracked walnuts, Amarena cherries and a field of violets billowing from the glass. The wine effortlessly rounds on the palate with brambly berries, light “City Roast” espresso, white pepper, Salmiak licorice and fine-grained tannins, coming to a bright, bewitching finish.
