St Johns Road Winery 2016 "LSD" Lagrein, Shiraz, Durif
You're probably already familiar with the "S" in the LSD, but Lagrein and Durif aren't varietals that the average wine drinker are probably familiar with. Lagrein is a grape native to northern Italy that has recently become increasingly popular in Australia. Durif you are probably familiar with, except that you know it better by its California name, Petite Sirah, rather than the Australian moniker Durif. You know the whole Shiraz/ Syrah thing again. There's more here than a funny name and colorful label, an intense color profile and freshness from the Lagrein grapes, Shiraz contributes dark plums, a beautiful fragrance and mid-palate structure, while Durif brings fleshy dark fruit notes and fine savory tannins.
