Paloma 2014 Spring Mountain, Napa Valley Merlot
Most high end, "cult" wine producers in Napa Valley are known for their Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet based blends. Things are a little different at Paloma, where Merlot has always been the star of the show, before and since winning Wine Spectator's Wine of The Year in 2003 (and has appeared there twice since, a rare feat for a California Merlot). The 2014 is another winner, featuring a complex bouquet of black berry fruits, black stone fruits, unsweetened cocoa and floral notes with underlying mineralality. The palate is classic Spring Mountain Merlot, with a rich and silky mouth feel, well balanced, with flavors of berries, fruit, cassis, and baking spice, and a super-long finish.
